Hospital Bag Styles

When you are pregnant and packing for your hospital bag, the first thing you need to get if you don’t already have one is a bag/s for the hospital stay.

Personally I had three bags packed on both pregnancies.

1) It was mentioned that I may have to go in to hospital early so I packed a long-term bag – I used a overhead cabin size (airplane) suitcase for this but that was just because it would be a few weeks. There was also talk of a possible c-section so I had items in here suitable for that too, as that means you may have to stay another 4/5 nights in hospital after a c-section on your first (in Ireland).

On my second baby after experiencing staying in hospital for a few weeks before the baby was born I also left extra things in the boot of the car, that meant every time my husband came in to visit with the car, if I needed anything he didn’t need to go searching at home and me trying to explain where everything was! (If you are a long time follower you may remember me saying on my first when I ran out of clothes – as I didn’t like staying in my pjs all day in hospital – I asked my husband to bring in a few things to me. And in he comes with a bag of stuff included a black tie long silk dress !!!! It’s safe to say I didn’t need that in the hospital , never mind the fact that I couldn’t fit in to it if I tried !!! Made me laugh though!)

2) Premature labour was mentioned so prior to my stay in hospital I had a bag ready in case I went in to early labour at home. I just used a material weekend size bag for this with enough clothes & items for myself and the baby for 48 hours. The material bags are easier to squash under the bed or in to presses. They are also lighter than the cabin bags and more compact. I would only recommend the cabin size for long term stay.

3) A smaller labour bag that could fit within either of these bags so that it could be taken out easily if I went in to labour in hospital and didn’t want to be searching through my bigger bags.
